What Irelia threatens, which cooldowns open your safe window, and Riot's own notes on beating it.
Irelia is a fighter that wants to trade repeatedly, survive the return damage, and win the third exchange rather than the first. At 200 attack range Irelia has to walk into damage to deal it, so every trade begins with a decision about whether you can afford the walk.
That shapes the lane more than any item choice: you are deciding, every wave, whether to stand where it does its job.

When Irelia strikes enemies with spells she gains stacking bonus Attack Speed. At maximum stacks she also gains bonus damage on hit.
Irelia dashes forward to strike her target, healing herself. If the target is Marked or dies to Bladesurge, its cooldown refreshes.
Irelia charges a strike that deals more damage as she charges. She takes reduced physical damage during the charge.
Irelia sends out two blades which converge on each other. Enemies caught in between are damaged, stunned and Marked.
Irelia fires a massive number of blades that explode outward upon hitting an enemy champion. Enemies hit by the blades are damaged and Marked. Afterwards the blades form a wall that will damage and slow enemies that walk through it.
Each of those numbers is a window. With its defining ability down, Irelia is a fighter without the tool the whole kit is built around — that is when the lane is yours.
Irelia is mana-gated, which is the real limit on how often you can contest a wave early.
Worth reading even when you are the one playing Irelia: it is the list of what your opponent is being told to do to you.
| Stat | Level 1 | Level 18 |
|---|---|---|
| Health | 630 | 2585 |
| Attack damage | 65 | 65 |
| Armour | 36 | 115.9 |
| Magic resist | 30 | 64.9 |
Movement speed 335 and attack range 200 do not grow with levels — they are the two numbers that stay true all game.
